A Press Conference was held at the Kennedy Hotel, in Sliema, to present the Programme that was to be held by the “Sliema” Youth Band / Orchestra at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University, in aid of the Missionary Project by the Sisters “Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus” in Kenya. The Press Conference was addressed by Mr Lino Chircop, Vice-President of the Sliema Philharmonic Society.

Vocal and Musical Programme by the “Sliema” Youth Band / Orchestra under the direction of the “Sliema” Band Assistant Director Mro Sigmund Mifsud at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University of Malta.
For another year this concert was held together with the Sisters “Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus” and was under the distinguished patronage of the President of Malta, His Excellency Prof. Guido de Marco and under the co-ordination of the Society’s Vice-President, Mr Lino Chircop.
Funds from this concert were in aid of the Missionary Project of the sisters in Kenya, to build a new school for abandoned children.
In this Concert together with the “Sliema” Band was an element from the Orchestra and the participation of talented singers Fabrizio Faniello, Georgina and Ryan Abela. Solos by Godfrey Mifsud on the Clarinett and a euphonium duet by Roderick Bugeja and Jesmond Azzopardi were also included.
The numerous public present could also appalud to the various musical sketches held such as during the interpretation of “La Bamba” and the “Peter Gunn” where amongst the various soloists taking part there was Noel Grima, a band student, on the Trumpet. Togethet with the Band there was also the Sancti Iuliani Cantores Choir of St. Julians.

Musical Programme by the “Sliema” Band at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall, University, under the title “Concert for Europe”
marking the international success held by the Band in Brussells, Belgium and The Hague, Holland. The Band was conducted by ist Band Master Mro Ronnie Debattistat FLCM and was also accompanied by the special guest, Jose’ Garcia Gutierrez, a leading French Horn player with the Orchestra of Pamplona in Spain. Presentation was by Claire Agius Ordway. Amongst the various works played were “Fanfarre for the Common Man” of Aaron Copland, adapted for the Band by Mro Ronnie Debattista and “The Grand Father Clock” with Mro Sigmund Mifsud, Band Assistant Director, as soloist on the trumpet. The Band interpreted also a special arrangement of the “Bolero” of Maurice Ravel presented to the “Sliema” Band by the “Banda Sociale Erminio Deforian” of Trentino, Italy, and the musical “Phantom of the Opera” played also by the Band in its visit in Holland in the “Des Indes Hotel” and in Brussels.
The programme ended with the “Inno Sliema” of Cardenio Botti and the Hymn “Ode to Joy” of Beethoven and The National Anthem in remebrance of that special moment when the “Sliema” Band played in Brussels for the first time.
The programme was filmed by NET TV.


After the programme a Gran-Buffet Dinner was organised at the Kennedy Nova Hotel in Sliema with the presence of the Society’s Committee and various members and supporters of the “Sliema” Band.

Press Conference at the Kennedy Nova Hotel, Sliema, to present the Programme which will be held by the “Sliema” Youth Band / Orchestra at the Republic Hall of the Mediterrenean Conference Centre in Valletta on an invitation by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the National Committee for Celebrations of Malta’s Entry in the European Union. The Press Conference was addressed by the Society’s President Cav. Dott. Tonio Portughese, Dr. Francis Zammit Dimech, Minister of Tourism and Culture and other officials.

First Rehearsal Concert was held in the Cultural Performance Hall by the “Sliema” Youth Band in preparation for the May Concert.

Youth Celebrative Concert by the “Sliema” Youth Band / Orchestra under the direction of Mro Sigmund Mifsud at the Republic Hall in the Mediterrenean Conference Centre in Valletta as part of the Celebrations for Malta’s Entry in the EU. Together with the “Sliema” Youth Band / Orchestra were also the “Sancti Iuliani Choir” of St. Julians conducted by Mro Lino Attard and popular singers Julie Zahra , Ludwig Galea, Olivia Lewis, Georgina and Ryan Abela, and Fabrizio Faniello.

After the first part of the Concert the Society’s President Cav. Dott Tonio Portughese presented Tourism and Culture Minister Dr Francis Zammit Dimech with a commemorative plaque as an appreciation to him by the Society.

Lively Concert by the “Swinging Stones”, a German band from Darmstadt renowned for its swing and jazz music style, in the Cultural Performace Hall of the Society, a concert held also as part of the activities for Malta’s Entry in the EU.
This German Band of about 25 musicians accompanied by two maltese singers was conducted by Mro Enno Syphus, from “Edith Stein” College. Among the various interpretations were Lady Madonna, Tequila, Coconut champagne, Pink Panther and The Final Countdown.
Present for this concert were Tourism and Culture Minsiter Dr Francis Zammit Dimech and President Emeritus of the Society Dr. Censu Tabone.

Celebration of Society’s Day with a mass held in the Parish Church of “Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus” with the participation of the “Sliema” Youth Band under the direction of Mro Sigmund Mifsud.

Afterwards, in the Cultural Performance Hall, presentations were held to various students who distinguished themselves most. In the Brass Section under Mro Sigmund Mifsud the winner was Dione Gauci (Althorn) ; in the Woodwind Section, under Mro Godfrey Mifsud winner was Mathew Fenech (Saxafone), under Mro William Debattista winner was Gabriel Agius (Clarino). There was also the presentation for the best projects done by the students, with the best projects being those of Deborah Agius and Dale Cachia. This year’s title of the project was “My Instrument”.
Lesley Tabone won the “Cardenio Botti Trophy” (made from marble by the Society’s Treasurer Ronald Pisani) given to the society’s bandman that distinguished himsef most during the year.
Other presenations were those of Honorary Bandmaster Mro Michael Zammit, Band Director Mro Ronnie Debattista and of the Society’s President Cav. Dott Tonio Portughese who presented a new trumpet and two photos of the Programmes conducted by Mro Ronnie Debattista in March and Mro Sigmund Mifsud in May.
A Reception was also held for the directors and players of the Sliema Wanderers FC to celebrate their success in winning the Maltese Football Championship. During the reception Sliema Wanderers President Hon Robert Arrigo was presented with a commemorative plaque while the “Sliema” Youth Band played the Hymn “Super Wanderers”.
